How to Upgrade SSD on Laptop with Simple Steps?

One of the best ways to improve your laptop’s storage performance is by upgrading the SSD. Not all laptops support SSD upgrades, but if yours does, it’s usually relatively straightforward and can be completed in a matter of minutes – though if you are swapping out the boot drive, you’ll also need to reinstall your operating system.

How to upgrade your SSD

The specifics for how to upgrade an SSD for any particular laptop  depends on the design of that device.

The first step is to see if your laptop supports SSD upgrades. Check the user manual or manufacturer website to confirm whether it does. You will also need to purchase a compatible SSD. To do that, you’ll need to know what form-factor and type of SSDs your laptop supports.

If it uses the older 2.5-inch SATA standard, you’ll need to replace it with the same type of SSD. If it uses NVMe M.2 SSDs, you’ll want to match the PCI Express generation of the laptop. For example, if it supports PCIe 4, you’ll get the best results and performance if use a PCIe 4 SSD.

NVMe SSDs and their M.2 slots are all backwards compatible, so a PCIe 5 SSD will work in a PCIe 4 slot, and a PCIe 3 SSD will work in a PCIe 5 slot, but in each instance you will only be able to utilize the performance of the oldest standard in the laptop. So a PCIe 3 SSD will perform at PCIe 3 speeds, even if you put it into a more modern slot, and vice versa.

Also confirm what physical size your laptop supports. Most M.2 NVMe SSDs are built to support the 2280 or 2230 standard. 2280 SSDs are longer, while 2230 SSDs are designed for more compact devices. Confirm which one(s) your laptop supports before buying, and purchase the appropriate size.

When you’re ready to upgrade, you’ll want to backup any important data on the laptop as it is. Use an external drive or cloud-storage to store any important files and folders on an alternative medium to prevent data loss. You can do this manually, or use a companion software tool like Biwin Intelligence, which can clone your drive for you.

Shut down the laptop and unplug the power cable. Remove the battery if possible. Then turn the laptop over and locate the storage upgrade and maintenance panel. Use an appropriate screwdriver to remove any retaining screws, and remove the panel.

Locate the original SSD. Remove any retaining screws, and allow the drive to naturally lift in the slot. Gently remove it from the M.2 slot and place the original SSD to the side.

Take the new SSD and remove it from its packaging. Line it up with the M.2 slot, paying close attention to the notch in the center to confirm alignment. Press the SSD into the M.2 slot until it clicks into place. Press gently on to the end of the drive to lower it to horizontal alignment with the M.2 slot. Replace the retaining screw and use an appropriate screwdriver to tighten it. The SSD should now be secured in place.

Replace the storage cover for the laptop, then turn it back over and turn it on. The SSD should appear in the BIOS/UEFI and in your operating system. If not, you may need to initialize it. If you are using it as a boot drive for a new Windows installation, reboot the laptop and run the installation media to install Windows on the new SSD.
